Synopsis

An old woman with dementia sits silently, in a care home. A carer finds a box of old papers and scores. He recommends to throw everything away but stops when then an old score catches the eyes of the lady. The man begins to play the music on an old piano in the room. The music seems to open her imagination to a world of memories or dreams.

Many of us in western society have grown up with famous fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and Cinderella. Disney made the stories even more famous with their child-friendly animations. The stories are timeless but what do they really mean to us and what can we actually still learn from those old folktales?

DNOA takes the opéra comique Cendrillon, composed by Pauline Viardot, and questions its meaning in the twenty-first century. We go beyond the saccharine versions of the story and back to its roots, the version by the Brothers Grimm. We take the fairy tale as a device to research and reflect on our repressed feelings and thoughts, not being shy to touch upon the darker themes it might hold.
