Nina van Essen (1994) / mezzo-soprano
Dutch Mezzo-Soprano Nina van Essen (1994), graduated in 2016 summa cum laude with distinction from the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. She currently studies with Sasja Hunnego at the Dutch National Opera Academy. For this she received a scholarship from the Miluška Duffková foundation. In the context of an Erasmus Exchange she studied in France, Lyon at the C.N.S.M.D (2014-2015) where she worked with singing teachers Isabelle Germain, Francoise Pollet and coach Fabrice Boulanger. Before she began her Bachelor studies she followed a Young Talent program at the school for Young Talent in The Hague.
In the Dutch National Opera she sang one of the Madrigalist in Manon Lescaut led by Alexander Joel, directed by Andrea Breth. In the Dutch National Opera Academy Nina will sing this year: Madame de la Haltiere in the opera Cendrillon by Jules Massenet and Hansel from the opera Hansel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdink.
Master classes/summer courses she followed from: Meinard Kraak Alain Garichot, Ilmo Ranta, Marjan Kuiper, Angelika Kirchslager, Maurice Lammerts van Bueren, Nadine Secunde, Neil Semer, Claron McFadden and Ira Siff.
Nina worked together with Krashna Musika (led by Ruben de Grauw) and Salone dell’Opera and gave concerts/recitals in halls like Concertgebouw, Muziekgebouw aan het IJ, Tivoli Vredenburg and De Doelen. She also works closely with pianist Harimada Kusuma with whom she in 2013 recorded her first solo CD. Besides singing lied and opera Nina is interested in ensemble singing, in 2014 she joined for example the project “Masters and companions’’ led by Kaspars Putnins and vocal coach Geert Bergs and sang in the choir of the opera “Medee’’, a production of OPERA2DAY.
